The questions listed here are frequently asked
during the initial web site design phase. We know if these
questions are asked up front, there would be fewer
site redesigns. The questions are in no special order so browse until
you find what you are looking for. If you have a question you want
answered and it isn't listed here, email

- I want a web site but I don't know how or where
to start?
If you are thinking about a web site
you have already started. Before you do anything else, get
a piece
of paper, sit
down and answer this question. Why do I want a web site?
Don't rush with
the answer, think about it. Many people get web sites
for the wrong reasons they waste time and money getting
a
web site that doesn't
meet their needs. Once you have determined the real
reasons for having a web site then it is time to go to the
next step.
- How do I know if I need a web site?
This is a tough question and the answers
are multiple. It is being said that all of us will have a web site
in the future. If you have a business it is imperative that you
have a presence on the Internet. Families find web sites
a great way to stay in touch. Another important component is how
much work
you
are
willing
to put into
your web
site. A web site
is an investment in time and money so, if you want one, you
need to be willing to work with your designer to make sure you
get the site you want and one that is within your budget. It is
easy to say yes but then people are often disappointed because
the site
turns
out
to
be
too much
work
or it doesn't look the way they want. Be willing to invest
in your site, it will pay off in the end. A good web site designer
will give you an idea of the work involved.
- My friend says they can design a site for me. Should I let them?
That depends. I always think it is never
a good idea to mix friendship or family with business. If you are
doing a fun site with your
friend then it might be OK but if your friend is not an educated
and experienced web site designer you may want to reconsider. We
have redone a few sites that were initially done by friends and
family members. Ask yourself which is more important your friendship
or your web site.
- What is a domain name and where do I get one?
The domain name tells you who owns the web
site. You buy a domain name from a number of different companies.
Shop around to compare
prices. We don't endorse any domain name company but some of
the common ones are Register.com, Network Solutions.com. It is
easy to buy a domain name and if you visit the site of a domain
name company they walk you through the process and it is easy.
Choosing the right domain for your site is very important so work
with the web site designer to get the right one. If you already
have a domain name the web site designer will help you maximize
the exposure of that name. Keep your domain name information, they
will assign you or ask you to
create
a username
and password.
This
will
be
important
information
for the web designer.
- What is a hosting company and do I need one?
A hosting company is where your web site
will reside after it is designed. There are many different types
of hosting companies but the most common type of hosting is called
"shared" hosting which means you
are given
space
on their
server.
There
is
a difference in hosting companies so be careful. Do your own research
or your web site designer can help guide you in the process. You
will want to know how often the sites they host are "down."
How is their technical support? What is their financial picture,
you don't want
to sign on and then have then go under financially.
- I saw a company that says I can have a
web site in 30 minutes or less, why should I pay so much money
to get a web site from your company?
3rd Row Designs creates
custom web sites only and this means the site is designed according
to your specifications.
The type of web site described in the question are created using
templates.
Some web
design
companies
create
a variety
of
templates and for a fee you an access these templates and they
make it easy for you to input the information you want. They are
easy, many are free for the price of hosting or domain name purchase
but they usually have limitations. If you decide that you want
to use a template site understand the limitations first before
you put in all the time and effort.
